Doc. MUDr. Tomáš Bolek, PhD. is an internist, an obesitologist with experience in the field of cardiology. He currently works as an associate professor at the 1st Internal Medicine Clinic of the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine (JLF) in Martin, Comenius University in Bratislava (UK), as well as a physician at the 1st Internal Medicine Clinic of the JLF UK and UNM in Martin. He actively participates in both clinical and scientific activities at the clinic.
Associate Professor T. Bolek began his medical career by obtaining the title of MUDr. at the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin, Comenius University in Bratislava. During his studies, he showed an interest in internal medicine and cardiology, which determined his future specialization. He began his professional practice as a secondary physician at the 1st Internal Medicine Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine in Martin, where he was engaged in treatment and prevention activities and gained valuable experience in the field of care for patients with a wide range of internal diseases.
He received his philosophiedoctor (PhD) degree in the field from the JLF UK in 2020. He received his specialization in the field of internal medicine from the JLF UK in 2020. He was awarded the title of associate professor in 2024 after defending his habilitation thesis entitled “Factors influencing the effectiveness of direct oral anticoagulants”. Since 2024, he has been working in the position of associate professor, where he is engaged in scientific and research activities, is a supervisor of 5 doctoral students, is engaged in research in the field of obesitology and cardiology, and is also engaged in the treatment and prevention area, especially in the field of obesitology and cardiology. In addition to clinical practice, doc. Bolek is also dedicated to the education of future doctors and specialists in the field of internal medicine. He pays special attention to the comprehensive treatment of obesity, including pharmacological, behavioral and interventional approaches, as well as its close links to endocrinological diseases, especially polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Doc. Bolek is a proponent of consistent preventive medicine and an individualized approach to the patient. In the field of diagnostics, he uses advanced imaging methods, including left atrial strain assessment (LA strain) and global longitudinal strain (GLS). He is the author of several scientific publications, a participant in professional conferences, and a member of research teams focused on personalized cardiology and obesity.
The associate professor is a member of the Slovak Cardiological Society, the Slovak Obesity Association, the Slovak Society of Internal Medicine, and the Slovak Society of Hemostasis and Thrombosis.
