Professional profile
Professor Šutovský was born in 1973 and graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University in Bratislava. After completing his studies at the Faculty of Medicine of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in 1997, he joined the Institute of Neuroimmunology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, where he focused on the issue of Alzheimer’s disease from a molecular-biological perspective. He was instrumental in the birth of the Slovak Alzheimer’s Society and actively participated in the introduction of new scientific methods into Alzheimer’s disease research and testing early markers of Alzheimer’s disease. In 1998-1999, he completed an internship at the Department of Neurology, Manchester Royal Infirmary in Great Britain, which is among the most prestigious clinics in the field of dementia diagnostics and management. In 1999-2000, he worked as a visiting scientist at the Max Planck Institute of Structural Molecular Biology in Hamburg, Germany. He focused mainly on the issue of the molecular pathology of Alzheimer’s disease. Specifically, he worked on projects related to tau protein pathology and its spread in the brain and projects for the implementation of scientific knowledge into clinical practice. From 2000 to 2003, he worked at the Department of Neurology at the University Hospital of St. Cyril and Methodius in Bratislava, and from 2003 to the present, he has been working at the 1st Neurology Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Bratislava and the University of Bratislava. In 2003, he successfully completed the 1st degree certification and in 2008 the 2nd degree certification in neurology. In 2007, based on the successful defense of his dissertation “Molecular-biological aspects of dementias”, he was awarded the scientific and academic rank of PhD. In 2015, he was habilitated by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University as an associate professor of neurology and was appointed professor in the field of neurology in 2023. In 2023, he also successfully passed the exam in the specialization field of Healthcare Management and Financing.
Professor Šutovský’s professional focus is primarily focused on neurodegenerative diseases, with a main focus on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. His area of interest also includes the genetics of neurodegenerative diseases and strokes. He also deals with rare neurological diseases, where he continuously contributes with his advice and experience to the diagnosis of previously unexplained cases of rare neurological diseases in Slovakia. In the field of pedagogical activity, he was the supervisor of several successfully defended final theses, created his own scientific school dealing with cognitive disorders and dementias, and is building the Center for Cognitive Disorders and Dementias within the 1st Neurological Clinic, which in 2022 became part of the prestigious European Alzheimer’s Disease Consortium (EADC). He is the author of a university textbook dealing with the genetics of strokes, co-author of several scientific monographs and a large number of professional papers in domestic and foreign journals. He serves as an editor for the Journal of Alzheimer’s disease and Frontiers of Neurology. He is also a member of the editorial boards of Neurology for Practice and the Slovak postgraduate journal Neurology. He is a reviewer for a number of prestigious neurological journals.
He is a member of the Slovak Neurological Society, the European Academy of Neurology, Alzheimer Europe, Alzheimer’s Association, and a member of the EAN Scientific Panel on ALS & FTD. He acts as a representative of Slovakia at the meetings of the European Group of Governmental Experts on Dementia. He is a member of several professional committees of the doctoral study, and is a co-guarantor of the Medical Neurosciences study department. He participated in solving 14 grant tasks and projects. He has been an invited speaker at many scientific conferences around the world. He continuously appears on national television, where he spreads awareness in the field of neurological diseases and conveys knowledge to the general public.
