Professional profile
MUDr. Ivan Turčan, PhD, completed his studies in general medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the Comenius University in Martin in 2011. 1987. In August 1987, he joined the Department of Pathology of the Roosevelt Hospital in Banská Bystrica as a secondary physician. Since 1988, he has worked at the II. Surgical Clinic of the Roosevelt Hospital in Banská Bystrica in the Department of Oncosurgery. In 1990, he received a 1st-level certification in surgery, in 1995 a 2nd-level certification in surgery. In 1999, he received a specialization in clinical oncology. He worked at the surgical clinic as an independent physician, focusing on surgery of digestive tract and breast tumors. In 2006, he completed a work-study stay at the Hammelburg Hospital, Germany. Since 2010, he has been working as the head of the Surgical Department of the St. Agatha’s Breast Center in Banská Bystrica. In In 2011, he graduated from the European Academy of Senology in Salzburg and Düsseldorf, obtaining the EAoS certificate under the professional guarantee of Prof. Umberto Veronesi. In 2013, he defended his dissertation at the Slovak University of Health Sciences in Bratislava on the topic: “Surgical treatment of palpable breast lesions” with the award of the title “PhD”. In 2016, he obtained a certificate in the certified professional activity “Breast surgery”.
He is the medical author and implementer of the project of the first specialized hospital for the diagnosis and treatment of breast tumors in the Slovak Republic – Mammacentrum sv. Agáta in Banská Bystrica. He has been its medical guarantor since its launch in December 2009. In 2019, he was awarded the title “Top Doctor” in the field of “Surgery” awarded based on a survey of experts and readers of Zdravotnícke noviny and the title “My Doctor” awarded by the Minister of Health based on the recommendation of the Association for the Protection of Patients’ Rights of the Slovak Republic. Chief of Staff Turčan has 38 years of clinical experience with more than 3,000 breast cancer surgeries.
